The Indian men’s team beat Australia in the playoff for 15th place. It was their only win from seven games in the tournament.
On Friday, India defeated Australia 25-21 to finish 15th in the Asian men’s handball championship 2022 in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
It was the first victory for the Indian men’s handball team in the tournament. India also finished last in the Asian men’s handball championship for the first time. Their previous low was 12th place in the 2018 edition.
India had lost to Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Australia in the preliminary round, finishing last in Group B.
As a result, they were assigned to Group III of the main round. Top teams from Group III and IV competed in the ninth-place playoff, second-placed teams competed in the eleventh-place playoff, and so on.
India finished third in Group III of the main round, losing to the UAE, Vietnam, and Jordan to qualify for the 15th place playoff against Australia, who finished last in Group IV.
The Indian handball team went toe-to-toe with Australia in a competitive first half, but trailed 11-14 at halftime.
After the second half began, however, India scored five of the next six goals to take a 16-15 lead.
Over the next 20 minutes, India steadily increased their lead to claim victory.
